this man is michael gove, the uk ‘education secretary’.
his department has just released a report stating guidelines for schools when dealing with poor behaviour. it includes:
thanks, gove. you’re sending out a message that running is bad, and not only that, but a punishment. you’re demonising an activity that is physically and mentally rewarding, as well as contradicting the government’s own policy in reducing childhood (and adult) obesity levels. this, at a time when two thirds of british adults are listed as overweight.
one can only assume mr gove did not enjoy cross country at school, not least because of his recent policy of selling off school playing fields for profits. but then when running is as bad as picking up litter, or writing detention, i suppose it all makes sense…
go away, gove. please. the world had enough of you and your anachronistic self a long time ago.
